What exactly is açaí?
Açaí is a small berry from the Brazilian Amazon. Its nutritional profile has made it famous for being rich in antioxidants (especially anthocyanins), healthy fats (like omegas 3, 6, and 9), and fiber. In terms of benefits, it is comparable to blueberries, but with an even higher antioxidant concentration.
Its flavor is quite peculiar: earthy, slightly bitter, with an undertone reminiscent of cocoa. It is not naturally sweet, as it contains 0% natural sugars. This is key to understanding why some bowls that taste like sweet fruit ice cream... are not made solely from açaí.
The problem: disguised açaí
Today, many brands and establishments promote their açaí as "100% natural" or "pure," but what they serve is a mixture with:
- Cane sugar or syrups.
- Guarana essence (water, sugar, flavorings).
- Preservatives and stabilizers.
- Artificial sweeteners like maltitol.
- Filler fruits to increase volume.
It's also common for the base to contain less than 50% açaí pulp, which already makes it something else entirely.
And be careful with toppings: industrial granolas with refined vegetable oils, white flours, sugars, additives, fillers, creams that are not 100% nuts...
The 5 red flags of "suspicious" açaí bowls
1. They tell you it's 100% pure... but it's sweet
Pure açaí is not sweet. If they sell it to you as "100% açaí" and it tastes sweet, they are deceiving you or they don't know what they are offering. It is biologically impossible for something without sugar to taste sweet without being sweetened. They may have added syrups, sugar, sweeteners... without telling you.
2. They tell you they sweeten it with guarana
Natural guarana is not sweet either. What is usually used is guarana essence, which contains water, sugar, and artificial flavoring. If they tell you it's sweetened only with guarana and it tastes sweet, they are probably serving you a processed and sugared mixture.
3. They tell you it has no sugar, but don't explain how it's sweetened
When they omit information, it's most likely intentional. If they don't specify, it's probable that they use maltitol or other cheap sweeteners that can alter your microbiota, cause intestinal inflammation, or even side effects like diarrhea. Furthermore, they can encourage cravings for more sweetness by sending the same reward signal to the brain.
4. Ultra-processed granolas
A "supermarket" granola can have more sugar than an industrial pastry. It usually contains palm or sunflower oils, glucose syrups, refined sugar, white flours, and additives. If your health matters to you, demand a granola with whole ingredients and no fillers.
5. Menu with Oreos, condensed milk, and chocolate chips.
This speaks for itself. If the menu offers these options, they are probably not prioritizing your health. And if you cannot verify the ingredients of their creams, yogurts, or proteins, even worse. Beware of toppings disguised as healthy!
(Bonus) Proteins and yogurts without clear branding or composition. The ideal options are unflavored, without fillers, and organic. Yogurts from grass-fed cows. If there is no transparency, there are reasons to be suspicious.
How to choose a good açaí bowl?
- Ask: What do they sweeten it with? What is the % of açaí? How do they make their granola?
- Observe: The menu, the available toppings, the clarity with which they explain ingredients. Don't be ashamed or afraid to ask. You have every right to know what you are going to consume. Information is power for you to decide what you want. Don't let others decide for you. Don't let yourself be fooled.
What we do at Sanna
- Our base is açaí + banana, nothing else, and we prepare it fresh daily.
- Our granola is our own because we couldn't find any that met our standards.
- All our toppings are whole foods. If any of our toppings are not a single ingredient, such as our cocoa and hazelnut cream with natural unpasteurized rosemary honey, they are made with whole ingredients and we always share all the ingredients on the menu.
- The superfoods, creams, and yogurts we use are organic. The fruits are not yet, but we are working on it.
Final bonus tip
If all the açaí bowls you try taste the same, and ours reminds you of one you'd make at home... that tells you a lot.
When something is beneficial for you, pure, and of the best quality (clean, organic, without additives), they will proudly tell you about it. If they hide it, it's because there's marketing but no consciousness.
Choosing well is not about obsessing, but about being aware. Your body notices the difference. Not all açaí bowls are the same. And if you made it this far, it's because you know it too.
In this blog, we will continue to share what is not always said, so you can take care of yourself without sacrificing pleasure.
